Elections 2024 & Climate Emergency: A Prayer

Father of Creation,

God of Compassion,

We come before you in reverence,

Grateful for the beauty of your creation,

And mindful of our responsibility to steward it with care.

This world is our home,

And you declared it to be good.

Father of Creation,

God of Justice,

You beckon us to cherish and protect,

To honour the interconnectedness of all existence,

To extend love and compassion to our neighbours—

local and global ,

Present and future.

Yet, we confess our failures,

Our negligence in safeguarding your creation,

Our complicity in perpetuating harm.

In our pursuit of progress,

We have inflicted wounds upon the Earth,

Disregarded the cries of the marginalized,

And ignored the warnings of science.

Lord, have mercy.

Christ, have mercy.

Now we confront the consequences of our indifference,

As the climate crisis intensifies,

Ravaging communities, ecosystems, and futures.

We have been deaf to the cries of the Earth,

Blinded by short-term gains,

And lulled into complacency by convenience.

Lord, have mercy.

Christ, have mercy.

In the midst of apathy and ignorance,

We awaken to the urgency of the hour,

Recognizing the imperative to act with courage and conviction.

Lord, have mercy.

Christ, have mercy.

With hearts burdened by repentance,

We beseech your guidance and grace,

May your Spirit ignite within us a renewed commitment,

To advocate for justice and equity,

To amplify the voices of the marginalized,

And to strive for reconciliation with the Earth.

Grant us the strength to confront systemic injustice,

To challenge vested interests,

And to cultivate communities of solidarity and compassion.

We heed your call,

To join hands across borders and ideologies,

To engage in collective action,

And to demand transformative change.

Lord, empower us with your Spirit,

Christ, inspire us with your love.

And so we pray,

For those entrusted with political leadership,

For the upcoming elections and elected officials,

May integrity and wisdom guide their decisions,

May they champion policies that prioritize the well-being of all,

And may they heed the cries of the most vulnerable,

Acting decisively to safeguard the future of our planet and its inhabitants.

Lord have mercy.

Christ have mercy.

And so we pray for communities affected by climate breakdown,

For climate refugees as their homes become uninhabitable,

For those caught up in fires and floods,

And for those without food during climate-induced drought.

Lord, have mercy.

Christ, have mercy.

Father of Creation,

God of Love,

In humility and hope, we offer this prayer,

Committing ourselves afresh to the work of restoration and reconciliation,

For the sake of generations yet unborn,

the worlds most vulnerable

And the flourishing of all creation.

May your Kingdom Come,

May your will be done,

May we be those who live in love

and move in hope

until that day when the storms of climate chaos will cease,

and tears will be wiped away

in the reconciliation of all things.

Amen
