Mary’s Monologue
When the angel came to me, I didn’t know what to say.
“Greetings, favoured one,” he said. Favoured? Me?
I was just a girl—poor, ordinary, unimportant.
But the angel’s words stayed with me: “Do not be afraid, for you have found favour with God.”
Do not be afraid.
Those words echoed in my heart as I said yes to God’s call.
Even when I didn’t understand, even when I was scared, I trusted.
But the path wasn’t easy.
We travelled to Bethlehem, Joseph and I, step after weary step.
The road was long, the nights cold.
And when we arrived, there was no room—no place to rest, no place to give birth.
Only a stable, filled with the smells and sounds of animals.
And now, here I am—holding this child, this tiny life.
He is the Saviour of the world, and yet he is so small, so fragile.
The prophet Isaiah said, “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given.”
I think of those words as I look at him.
How can it be that this child holds the hope of the world?
But then I remember: God’s ways are not ours.
He works in the humble, the unexpected, the small.
You may feel unworthy, as I once did.
You may wonder if you’re strong enough to carry the weight of what life has given you.
But hear this: God sees you.
He chooses you, as he chose me.
And in your struggles, he is with you—bringing hope, light, and peace.
So come, all you faithful, all you weary. Come as you are.
For tonight, unto us, a Saviour is born.
Prayer
Loving God,
You came to us in the humble form of a child,
born into the fragility of our world.
We bring to you all those who feel small and unseen—
the ones carrying heavy burdens, those feeling lost and weary.
May they, like Mary, find strength and courage in their vulnerability.
May they hear the words of your angel: “Do not be afraid, for you have found favour with God.”
In this holy season, may they know your gentle presence,
and find comfort in your loving embrace.
Grant them peace and hope, as they journey through life’s struggles,
for you, O God, are Emmanuel—God with us.
Amen.
